Your child should have their eyes tested regularly from a young age as children’s eyesight develops at a dramatic rate. Did you know your little one’s eyes are fully formed at about 8 years of age? This means that the earlier any eye conditions or vision problems are detected, the easier they will be to correct.

It’s commonly thought that children must be able to read before they can have an eye test but this is not the case. At our practice we have tests suitable for children of all ages and reading capabilities. This ensures that their eyesight can be assessed and any problems corrected as soon as possible; before they start school in many cases.

It’s important that your child is excited and enthusiastic about their eyewear, otherwise they won’t want to wear it. For that reason we have a fabulous range of children’s frames at Scher & Lasky Opticians, including character glasses, Ralph Lauren Kids, Oakley Juniors and Ray-Ban Juniors. Our friendly staff are also always more than happy to help you and your child make the best choice.

All children up to the age of 16 receive free eye tests, paid for by the NHS, and up to the age of 18 if they are in full time education.

Myopia Management for Children

You may, or may not have come across the term Myopia before. This is simply short sightedness, and is very common in children and adults alike. Myopia in children is growing at an alarming rate, due to factors including lifestyle, studying and spending less time outdoors. If parents are myopic (short sighted), this also significantly increases the likelihood of your child becoming short sighted.

Being able to diagnose and treat myopia early in children can help slow the progression of myopia, which can, in turn, lead to better outcomes for eye health as adults.

Here at Scher and Lasky we are passionate about Myopia Management for children, as we want to help improve the long term health of our patients eyes, and we are delighted that we are able to offer our patients a number of solutions.

Alternatively, if your child doesn’t like wearing glasses, or they are particularly sporty, we also have myopia control contact lenses. Currently we offer Coopervision MiSight contact lenses to any suitable children. Success rates are very similar to spectacles, and give our children the flexibility to choose how they wish to address their myopia.
